Apple Cuts App Store Fees in China: Big Win for Developers
Apple Inc. is making a major move in China by lowering the fees it charges app developers, signaling a significant concession in one of its most lucrative markets. This step comes amid potential antitrust scrutiny by Chinese regulators.
According to a statement released by Apple on Thursday, the standard commission on purchases in the China App Store will drop from 30% to 25%, effective March 15. This change applies to apps on both iOS and iPadOS, the company noted on its developer website. Apple explained that the adjustment follows “discussions with the Chinese regulator.”
Big Relief for Small Businesses & Mini Apps 💼✨
Apple is also reducing fees for small businesses and mini app developers — lightweight apps that run within platforms like Tencent’s WeChat. For these developers, the commission will drop from 15% to 12%, benefiting those who earned less than $1 million in revenue in the previous year.
This move marks a significant climbdown in China, Apple’s second-largest market after the U.S. The adjustment is aimed at resolving long-standing tensions with Chinese tech giants such as Tencent and ByteDance (owner of TikTok), which host third-party apps within their super-app platforms, indirectly competing with Apple’s ecosystem.
“It’s a win for any app developers making significant revenue in China,” said Rich Bishop, founder of AppInChina, a firm that assists overseas developers in distributing apps in the country. 🌟
Apple’s Commitment to Developers 📈🔒
Apple emphasized that it remains committed to fair and transparent terms for all developers. The company stated it will “always offer competitive App Store rates to developers distributing apps in China.”
While Apple has long maintained its ecosystem to ensure quality, security, and user experience, its once-universal 30% in-app purchase fee has faced increasing scrutiny worldwide, including in Europe, the U.S., and now China.
This fee reduction could reshape the App Store landscape in China, offering both big and small developers more opportunities to grow in the fast-expanding market.
